When our master alchemist, Greg, first had the idea to take a deliciously smooth and fruity grain whisky that had already spent a considerable number of years sleeping in a first fill ex-bourbon cask and finish it in a second-fill ex-Oloroso Sherry cask, he asked around his peers and was told, in no uncertain terms, that he was crazy! “Don’t waste your time”! “You’ll get no more flavour out of that grain!” he was told.

But Greg was undeterred and set the wheels in motion to transfer this precious, already-delicious aged grain for a second sleep. He waited patiently until 12 months had passed before drawing a sample – it wasn’t good news. There was barely any impression of the dried fruits or cloves he was hoping for. Another guy might have cut his losses and bottled the liquid there and then, but he didn’t. There was a feeling coming from this liquid – he couldn’t taste it yet, but something was telling him to wait.

So he did. Another 9 months to be exact. And what happened was an alchemy like no other. Rich chocolate, spiced fruit and an unusual and pleasantly dry sherry note. That magic is captured in the heart of Batch One.

We spent a really long time finding the perfect partners to marry with this unusual and beautiful liquid. We selected another very old grain from near Edinburgh, one that would bring delicious creamy accents to the blend and accentuate the buttery texture. Finally, a crackle of spice for the finish with an old malt that had spent its first years in a second-fill Oloroso cask before being finished in a first-fill Oloroso cask.

They have long said that blending whisky is an art form. Well, this is art that will dance around your mouth and invite you in for another sip.
